Working with International Clients: Tips, Tricks, and Tools for Managing Editing Projects

Presented by John McDonald, MA, DTM, ELS

Description: There are vastly more researchers publishing in English than those who communicate in English as their native language. Facing this growing reality, as an academic editor, how can we best assist our clients?

The focus of this session is to initiate a discussion in the BELS community that deals with understanding what our clients actually need, the role we play as an editor, and then to discuss some common issues in the projects we are working on. To assist the editing process, there will also be a discussion of common editing tools, and maybe some new ones as well!

Bio: John McDonald, MA, DTM, ELS ([email protected]) began his active editing career while working in South Korea at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), a government-funded research institute that provides free education to qualified domestic and international MS and PhD students in the field of STEM. During his 10 years there, he revamped the academic writing and presentation skills curriculum, and then established editing and writing centers for the students and faculty on the campus. Moving on from GIST, he became a trainer for Editage Korea (Cactus Communications), giving a range of webinars, workshops, and various other sessions that focused on ‘Common Errors in Research Writing’ to clients in Korea, China, and Japan. Having now returned to his home country of Canada, Mr. McDonald joined the BELS Board of Directors in 2020, and has a strong interest in promoting BELS certification and membership internationally.
