Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I become a BELS member?

Only those who have earned their ELS designation are eligible to become a member of BELS. Dues are $45 each calendar year. Membership gets you access to the BELS newsletters, job postings, member rates for events and job ads, access to online community and networking tools, and more. Join here!

Q: My employer is (or I am) looking for editors or writers to hire. How can I place an ad on the Job Listings page? How much does it cost? How do the members find out about job postings?

First, visit the Want to Place an Ad? page for information about how to submit an ad and how to calculate the cost. Any employer may submit a paid ad, and BELS members may advertise open positions within their own businesses at a reduced rate. After payment is received, the webmaster posts the ad and notifies the employer or member.

Q: I'm interested in BELS certification. Can I buy the Study Guide or other BELS materials?

The BELS Study Guide is available for free and can be downloaded through the website.

Q: How many questions do I have to answer correctly to pass?

Because the questions are weighted, there is no way to state the number of correct answers needed to pass. There is no scoring penalty for incorrect answers.

Q: Once I earn my ELS or ELS(D) designation, how do I maintain my credentials?
