Speakers:

Ali Foley Shenk
Ali Foley Shenk, ELS

Allison (Ali) Foley Shenk is an editor who lives with her husband and three teenage boys in Richmond, VA.  Ali earned her ELS in February 2021 and is currently working as a full-time freelancer.  In addition to editing, Ali is a musician and plays in several bands, notably one called WKNDR (Google us!).  She paid off her student loans with winnings from an appearance on Wheel of Fortune.  Ali's motto is, "If you don't ask, the answer will always be 'no.'"

Naomi Ruff
Naomi Ruff, PhD, ELS

As the President (and sole member) of RuffDraft Communications LLC, Naomi Ruff, PhD, ELS, puts her background in science (BS, Biochemistry; PhD, Neurosciences) and language (BA, Linguistics) to work helping scientists, physicians, and others in academia and industry tell their stories in a clear and compelling way, mostly – but not entirely – in the context of journal articles and grant applications.  Her projects range from writing to copyediting (but are most frequently substantive editing), on topics across the life sciences and medicine.  She earned her ELS in 2002 and has been on the BELS Board of Directors since 2014, currently serving as the Director for Exam Development.

Katharine
Katharine O’Moore Klopf, ELS
Katharine has been an editor for 40 years, and she has been self-employed for 29 of those years.  Two weeks after her middle child’s birth she started freelancing full time.  She is a medical editor helping nonfluent English writers in 20+ nations get published in 60+ medical journals by doing substantive edits of their manuscripts.  How did she become an editor for life?  Read this post on the blog of Editors Toronto.
